Leon McCarron, adventurer and
filmmaker, gave two thoroughly inspiring and thought-provoking Geography
Society lectures to nearly 500 pupils on Thursday 21st January on
recent Iranian and Chinese journeys.
He spoke about his
2014 five-week Iranian journey along the Karun river, from the snowy
Zagros mountains down to the coast and included clips from his latest
award-winning film; the intrigue included multiple secret police arrests
but overwhelming hospitality from the local people.
The 2011,
3,000 mile, six-month walk from Mongolia to Hong Kong took us on a
journey through both traditional and fast modernising localities in
China. The growing number of Chinese pupils at the College were here to
enjoy his tales and to reflect on this mysterious land of opportunity
and change.
Leon captivated his audience with his storytelling
and his artistic film clips and images. He warmly encouraged our pupils
to discover and follow their own passions. A gap year visit to Iran is
being planned and Chinese pupils are looking forward to visiting China
later in the year.
